INTERMEDIATE DRAWING: THE HUMAN BODY INSIDE AND OUT (DRW0069)

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Contemporary application of traditional methods for representing the body. Musculature and skeleton investigated to build a deep understanding of the mechanics beneath the body surfaces. Longer poses give opportunities to develop the drawing in stages and apply anatomical knowledge to make drawings with a concern for content and form. Combine visual accuracy and conceptual expression in student work. Lectures and readings on contemporary figurative artists working in a range of media add to visual understanding of the body inside and out.
FINAL PROJECT

“Prospective Anatomy: Human Wings”

Anatomical diagram, drawn in Procreate. Wing structure is borrowed mainly from birds.
Pair of articulated steel wings w/ OSB backing, riveted joints, fabric straps & steel wire.
Demonstration of the wings’ “flapping” motion.
Wings modeled by a classmate.

Notes from a class trip to Tufts’ Dissection Lab, in their biomedical building, where we got to observe open arm anatomy on 2 human cadavers.
Homework prompt: Draw the sensations within & beyond your body. (Attempt 1, start of semester)
NOTE: All figure drawings were with live models unless otherwise noted. Bones/muscles are informed guesses added in post.
More dissection lab notes.
Mid-semester critique.
Final project planning.
“Ecorche” 3D assignment. Polymer clay on a steel armature.
In-class project: whole class collaborated to paint accurate muscle & bone anatomy onto a live model using references & model’s own anatomy in 5 hours.
